We knew 25-years ago that Positron Emission Tomography (PET) held real promise for diagnosis and therapy planning in oncology, neurology and cardiology. Unfortunately, we all had to wait for the computing power, detector design and reimbursement to catch up. In 2000, reimbursement was available from Medicare. And the major OEM’s were ready with dedicated PET scanners.

Soon after the dedicated PET scanner began to penetrate the clinical market the OEM’s introduced the hybrid PET/CT. Today there are about 1200 PET and/or PET/CT scanners installed in the US. Most of these are used for oncology diagnosis and therapy management.

In 2004 each of the OEM’s ceased production of dedicated PET scanners and began producing the hybrid PET/CT exclusively. This left a void in the marketplace for those imaging centers wishing to acquire dedicated PET and associated equipment.

In 2005, Diagnostix Plus began to acquire and offer complete PET scanner systems and components as part of its nuclear medicine product line. Diagnostix Plus quickly became the largest provider of turnkey PET installations. Recognizing the complexity of establishing a PET imaging service Diagnostix Plus became expert in evaluating and acquiring quality pre-owned PET scanners.

In addition Diagnostix Plus offers training, installation, warranty, hot labs and image fusion software for merging the PET image with CT or MRI. Working with vendors specializing in each of these areas Diagnostix Plus is able to offer the best and most cost effective turnkey PET imaging solution for equipment and services to those wishing to add PET imaging to their imaging service.

In 2009, Diagnostix Plus will begin to offer pre-owned PET/CT systems as turnkey installations. The number of PET/CT’s available from the pre-owned market has been limited. We’ve withheld out involvement in pre-owned PET/CT’s because up until now most of the scanners that became available were very early models and some were prototypes. They work, but because they were the first to be installed they are not easily installed and maintained for daily clinical usage.

Only recently have higher quality PET/CT’s become available from the pre-owned market. Although of better quality than the earlier designs, their value to customers did not always match the acquisition price. PET/CT technology changed rapidly after introduction. With the addition of high resolution PET scanners and multi-slice CT’s, performance was added while the cost per unit was coming down. This meant that frequently the owners of older PET/CT’s with outstanding lease obligations required more to pay off the lease than the scanner was worth in the open market. As we move into 2009, the technology development pace has slowed. This has allowed for some equalizing in the marketplace.
